Are you in search of a tasty yet simple recipe for an Italian delicacy? Then you should try making tiramisu. Tiramisu is made with alternating layers of coffee-drenched ladyfingers, creamy mascarpone cheese, fluffy whipped cream, and cocoa powder on top. You can also use mascarpone for extra richness and allow the dessert to sit overnight. No matter whether you plan to offer this dessert during a festive celebration or eat it daily at home, it is effortless to prepare and delicious to consume.

Cooking Equipment Required
- Medium bowl
- Large mixing bowl
- Medium saucepan
- Hand mixer or stand mixer with whisk attachment
- Whisk
- Spatula
- Offset spatula
- 9×13 inches baking dish
- Damp paper towel
Ingredients Required
Coffee Mixture Ingredients
- 1.5 cups espresso or brewed coffee
- ½ cup dark rum

Preparing the Coffee Mixture
Firstly, you will have to brew 1.5 cups of espresso or coffee that is very strong. Wait for it to cool down and then transfer it to a medium bowl.
Then, pour half a cup of dark rum into the bowl of coffee. It will help soak the lady fingers, giving them a distinct taste of this popular dessert. Stir everything well.
Alternatively, you can use two cups of coffee instead of alcohol or increase the alcohol quantity and replace the dark rum with a coffee liqueur, orange liqueur, Amaretto liqueur, or any other beverage of your choice. In addition, you can vary the flavorings and ingredients used in tiramisu based on your preferences.
Leave it aside because you will reuse this mixture for assembling the tiramisu.
Mascarpone Mixture Ingredients
- 16 ounces mascarpone cheese,
- ¼ cup dark rum

Mascarpone Preparation
Now, take a large mixing bowl and add 16 ounces of mascarpone cheese. If you have never tasted this product, it resembles heavy cream but is denser than it. It has a luxurious taste and reminds people of whipped cream.
Besides, mascarpone cheese can be used to enhance the flavor of whipped cream. Thus, you can create a more stable frosting for cakes.
In addition to mascarpone cheese, pour 1/4 cup of dark rum into the bowl. Although some people prefer not to add alcohol to desserts, in my opinion, this is a boozy Italian delicacy. Yet, if you want to prepare tiramisu for children, you can easily skip it. However, it will still taste great.
Whisk everything until it becomes smooth and creamy.
Zabaglione Mixture Ingredients
- 6 egg yolks
- 2/3 cup (133g) granulated sugar

Preparation of Zabaglione
Now, take a medium saucepan and a medium bowl. You will create a double boiler with it. Fill the saucepan with two inches of water and start heating the water to make steam.
The next step in creating a tiramisu is making zabaglione, which consists of six egg yolks heated in sugar. You will separate egg whites to use them for other dishes in the future.
Pour 2/3 cups or 133 grams of sugar into the bowl with the egg yolks. Whisk the mixture well and put it above the steam.
The mild temperature will cook egg yolks to a safe temperature. In addition, the steam will help dissolve sugar and create the base of the dessert.
Continue whisking everything until the mixture changes its color and becomes somewhat thicker. After five to eight minutes of preparation, you will receive a light yellow mixture, where the sugar is completely dissolved. You can feel it when rubbing it between your fingertips.
Information About Tiramisu and Lady Fingers
As mentioned earlier, the dessert includes several layers of creamy mascarpone and soaked lady fingers. The latter are crispy and airy cookies that can absorb flavors fast while maintaining their structure.
Traditionally, tiramisu should contain coffee, but now you can encounter versions with fruits, such as oranges or lemons. Thus, you can replace coffee with fruit flavors and get the same great results.
Combination of Mascarpone and Zabaglione
Once the egg mixture is ready, remove it from the heat and pour it into the bowl with the mascarpone. Mix everything until it is well combined.
At this stage, the mixture looks a little runny because of the warmth. It will get firmer after you put it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes while you prepare the whipped cream.
Whipped Cream Mixture
- 2 cups cold heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Whipping the Cream
Transfer a large mixing bowl or a stand mixer equipped with a whisk attachment into the refrigerator and chill it for about ten minutes. Also, take two cups of cold heavy cream and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Start mixing them on low speed and gradually increase it to high speed. Your goal is to whip cream until soft peaks appear. You should constantly control the mixture because it can quickly become over-whipped.
Thus, you can reduce mixing time and whip it manually to prevent over-whipping. You should receive stiff peaks that remain soft.
Combine the prepared whipped cream with the mascarpone mixture. Some traditional Italian recipes use whipped egg whites instead. However, cream will create a lighter and creamier texture.
Whisk everything thoroughly to eliminate visible streaks. If it seems challenging, move the spatula along the bottom of the bowl and through its middle part. Rotate the bowl and mix simultaneously. You will preserve air bubbles that will make your tiramisu airy.
For the Assembly
- Lady fingers
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder

Assembling the Tiramisu
It is time to combine all ingredients. Take 9×13 inches dish and about 40 lady fingers.
Remember that you do not need to dip lady fingers in the mixture for a long period of time because it can lead to soaking. You should dip them for just a few seconds and turn them over.
If lady fingers are too big to fit in a dish, cut them in half. Arrange the soaked lady fingers in one layer. Put half of the mascarpone mixture in another layer. Then spread it evenly using an offset spatula.
Repeat the same procedure with another layer of lady fingers and the remaining portion of the mascarpone mixture.
Garnishing
- Edible flowers
- Shaved chocolate

Finishing and Chilling
Another advantage of this Italian dessert is that it can be made ahead of time because it requires being chilled overnight. Besides, the refrigerator will ensure that each layer remains creamy.
Sometimes you may need to prepare a quick version of tiramisu, which can be done with individual cups. It is unnecessary to slice them precisely.
After putting all ingredients in layers, sprinkle them with 1/3 cup of cocoa powder. It will add a rich finish to your dessert. Moreover, dark or Dutch-processed cocoa powder is recommended because it combines nicely with coffee.
Some people sprinkle the surface with edible flowers or shaved chocolate to decorate the dessert elegantly.
Finally, clean the edges of the dish with a damp paper towel and refrigerate the tiramisu overnight.

Serving the Tiramisu
Once tiramisu is chilled, slice it and serve. Its texture will become creamy and light. Thus, it will not be overwhelming, but you will taste the richness of coffee and mascarpone.
